Of hammers, rain, and people leaving
Found my lost hammer. Yay ^_^

Nine people left camp in the past couple of days, which has resulted in much needed space (and quiet!) We went into town on monday morning instead of our usual sunday night, due to massive storm predictions for monday evening. We didn't want to get stuck in camp because of a giant storm and end up running out of food for everyone, and we didn't want to spend the disgusting amount of money that getting five hotel rooms for two nights would require.

Work this week consisted of two days at a concreted hadrosaur that has both femurs, a tibia, an ischium, the pubis, and bits of skull and vertebrae. So basically, most of the butt. The rock is extremely difficult to dig through, requiring REALLY big chisels and sledgehammers. But at least the bone is pretty. I also spent one day going to a site that was worked on last year, in order to take off the winter jacket we had put over the skull and rebury the site. Sucks to be BURYING a dinosaur, instead of digging it up, but the bone, while looking nice at first, turned to powder the instant you looked at it. So bury it we did. There was also one day that we went back to that general area in order to pick up a Triceratops parietal (the middle part of the frill). It wasn't a particularly GOOD parietal, but John will obsessively collect anything Trike in order to get another data point for his thesis. The drive to both of these sites was long, but the upside is that we had to pass through Jordan, which meant milkshakes. Tasty tasty milkshakes. MMmmmmmmmm.....

So yeah, that's pretty much been the week. I get to be in charge tomorrow and take one or two people to the Ankylosaur site and work on that for a day or two. Glee!

    Rain Day
Due to the giant storm last night, we have today off. We only lost four tents, which is pretty good considering we had winds of 50+ mph. The four czechs were very rude this morning, hammering tent stakes and talking VERY loudly at about six in the morning. On a day when we were SUPPOSED to be able to sleep in as late as we wanted. Grr.

Nothing really going on today. Just sitting around online, talking with people, fixing the computers. Stupid viruses. Maybe I'll go out to the gar site later and try and find my lost hammer.

    Giant storm incoming
Okay, so it's been a while since I posted. Sorry, but I've been really busy.

We've finished Trikey Town, which had loads of horns and frill in it. We found MORE frill and horns scattered throughout the area, so various people are working on that. I've been prospecting a lot, though not finding much. We did find an ankylosaur skull, which made me really happy, and have another potential ankylosaur site, so things are nice.

Fourth of July we went to the Fort Peck Marina to hang out. Met several people from various museums, who were also there to relax. Good times were had by all.

Right now there is a storm rapidly approaching camp, so I'll have to finish this later. Ciao.

    Oh god the heat
It would seem that the heat has finally decided to arrive. Yesterday the temperature in the area we were working was 115 degrees. We decided to quit an hour and a half early, since working in that kind of weather is REALLY not fun.

This week I mainly worked on stuff in Trikey Town. We jacketed and took out two squamosals and a brow horn, as well as bits and pieces of stuff we haven't identified yet. Jack found an ankylosaur skull, and there may be more of it in the hill, which makes everyone happy. Lee found another pachycephalosaurus skull dome, which makes people even happier. Joe Johnston, the director of Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Jurassic Park 3, and Jumanji showed up and hung out with us for the week. He's a pretty cool guy.

Hmmm, what else. There was a 60 mile long storm last night that JUST missed our camp. It was pretty cool because we could see all the rain and lightning, but didn't get any of it.

Okay, I'm exhausted and can't think of anything more at the moment. Maybe I'll write more tomorrow.

    Week 3
This past week was busy. We didn't get a chance to work on Tuesday due to rain, but we made up for it the rest of the week.

Wednesday we hiked a lot of equipment (plaster, jackhammers, etc) out to Badda Boom, a site that had a Tyrannosaurus pubis sticking out of the hill. We left a crew there for the day, and then went to find Ducky Tail, a site that consists of a complete articulated Hadrosaur tail. It took a few hours to find that site, since the GPS coordinates were wrong. We finally found the site, dropped off more equipment, then went back to camp.

Thursday I went to help with the overburden at Badda Boom, and got to play with a jackhammer. That day was tiring, and we didn't manage to find anything. Quite disappointing.

Friday I went prospecting with Denver and found about six Triceratops. We named that spot "Trikey Town". John, who loves working on Trikes, is absolutely ecstatic about that site.

Saturday we closed down Badda Boom due to there being no more bone in the hill, then went prospecting. I was supposed to show John Trikey Town, but we got distracted by chunks of T.rex verts coming out of a hill and ended up spending the day trying to figure out of there was anything else around.

Sunday I took John to Trikey Town, then prospected a little with Lee and Kamron. We didn't go too far before stumbling upon bits of Pachycephalosaur skull, which is extremely rare. We spent three frantic hours digging into the hill to find more, but alas, there was no more. We then hiked for five miles with nothing else to show for it but bits of frill and very sore feet.

    That is week 3.

    Rainy day
Rain day again. Rain days mean we stay in the trailer/tents all day and do nothing. Rainy days are very frustrating with bad internet.

It's cold. It's supposed to snow tomorrow. Why is it snowing in June? Stupid montana weather. The only (marginally) good thing about it is that we get the day off digging, since you can't work too well in the wet...but we'd be doing nothing tomorrow anyway, since we're now waiting on several permits to come through. Sigh. It's cold.

So this is now day of the field season. It's hot. And filthy. But it's fun so far.

We got into camp late on monday (around 8:30 or so), pitched our tents, and immediately went to bed. Tuesday was spent organizing camp, getting tools, all that kind of thing.

On wednesday we went out prospecting a little, and found a few things of interest. One was some weird curvy bone that may be part of a pelvis. Unfortunately, that was the only thing there, and it wasn't really in the best of condition, so after a few hours of poking around at it we went and did something else. Currently, I'm working on a gar fish that's in a very fine shale...all you need to do is brush it lightly with a paintbrush and the rock falls to pieces. It's really dirty, but really easy digging. The gar has kind of exploded, so there are scales and verts and extraneous pieces everywhere. It's making putting a jacket on things kind of annoying, even more so because when we found this thing we thought it would take only a few hours to pull out. We're now on the third day of working on it, and there will be more work done on the stupid fish tomorrow. Hopefully, we'll be able to get it out and then go back to finding better stuff.

There are only 4 people at the fish quarry, out of 14. Five people are at a site that was worked on last year, trying to see if there is anything left. So far all that's coming out are ribs, and those can and will be left where they are. The other five people are wandering around prospecting trying to find stuff, and they did find a nice Triceratops scapula yesterday. It's pretty.

So far, that's really all that's happened so far. More posts as events warrant ^_^

I went to Yellowstone yesterday with Russ, Jaimie, Josh, and Kamron. We had to take two cars to get there comfortably, so I went with Russ in his jeep, while the others went in Jaimies cadillac (or however it's spelled). That was a rather dumb thing to do, since it was VERY cold on the trip down and back. In the park, though, it was fine.

First stop was Norris, which is always fun. Steamboat Geyser had a few minor eruptions, nothing big, but still nice to watch. We wandered around most of Norris, skipping the Porcelain basin to make sure we had time to get to Old Faithful. When we got back to the cars, we discovered that a crow had landed inside the jeep and had torn apart a bag of M&Ms and had somehow managed to open two Sunkist cans. Stupid crow.

After we left Norris we tried to go to Fountain Paint Pot and the Midway Gesyer basin, but the former was having repairs done to the boardwalk and the latter was closed to bears, so that sucked.

We headed down to Old Faithful and stayed there pretty much the rest of the day. We watched it erupt twice, and wandered around the geysers there. Anenmone geyser is fun to watch. Beehive had a nice eruption while we were there too. After wandering around for about three hours or so, we got back in the cars and headed home. The drive home was freezing. It was very nice to get back to a nice warm apartment.

Went to Yellowstone today. More when I've had a chance to nap and recover.
